Upgrade the infrastructure facilities to international standards to handle five times the present traffic and to accommodate wide body aircrafts flying to international destinations. Coimbatore,the second largest city of Tamil Nadu is an industrial hub of the country.It is also the gateway to tourist centers like Ooty,Kodaikanal and Kerala via Palghat.

Coimbatore airport caters to the needs of nearby districts, Tirupur, Salem, Erode and Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu and some districts of Kerala. A large volume of exports from both Industrial sector and Agriculture sector is being carried out from Coimbatore and these cities. Eighteen international flights and 280 domestic flights a week are in operation through Coimbatore Airport.

There are over 14 lakh people traveling annually from and to this Airport.About 7000 tonnes of cargo per year is handled here. The Airport needs to be developed so that more flights, particularly to destinations outside India can be operated.

Some of the important facilities to be created are:

• Faster acquisition of lands for airport expansion so that new full-fledged Terminal Buildings with all necessary infrastructures can be put up.
• More international flights with connections to Europe,USA,Thailand, and Daily flights to Sharjah and direct flight to Dubai.
• A six-lane approach road with enough lighting, landscaping and beautification.
• New Terminal building for Arrival and Departure with passenger facilities to international facilities.

A separate cargo complex

• A full-fledged plant quarantine office to certify and give clearance for plants and Agri-products for export.
• Facilities for helicopter service to Ooty, Kodaikanal and Yercaud.
• A small airstrip in Ooty for operation of smaller aircrafts from Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore,Hyderabad and Mumbai to Ooty.
