Coimbatore Corporation proposed a vehicle free Sunday for 4hours called "Happy Streets Coimbatore" sponsered by ITDP Chennai (Institute for Transport Development Policy) and RAAC.
We arranged a stake holders meeting on "Happy Streets Coimbatore" at Indian Chamber of Commerce, Coimbatore on Wednesday 1st July 2015 to promote vehicle free Sundays at R.S. Puram, D B Road and T V Swamy Road West.
This initiative "Happy Streets Coimbatore" aims to reroute traffic temporarily from D B road & T V Swamy Road west every Sunday morning and transform them to public spaces, where people can walk, jog and cycle enjoy other social activities. Coimbatore would be the first city to initiate vehicle free Sundays in Tamilnadu.
District Administration, Coimbatore Corporation and Coimbatore Police started car free day from Sunday, the 9th August 2015 and every Sunday thereafter. This initiative will be sponsered for 52 Sundays by Times of India. ITDP Chennai and RAAC Coimbatore willl be the leading NGO's for the event. RAAC organised 60 Volunteers to help the police to plan and manage the event successfully.
